Vietnam, India strengthen cooperation in security and law enforcement

Minister of Public Security General Luong Tam Quang hosted a meeting with newly accredited Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to Vietnam Shri Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa on the afternoon of December 26, in Hanoi.

At the meeting, on behalf of the Ministry of Public Security, Minister Luong Tam Quang congratulated Ambassador Shri Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa on his new post, and expressed confidence that, with his extensive experience, the Ambassador would achieve success in his tenure in Vietnam.

Minister Luong Tam Quang affirmed that, since the establishment of Vietnam–India diplomatic relations in 1972, the two countries have closely coordinated and supported each other at international forums, maintained exchanges of delegations at all levels, expanded trade and investment and promoted cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

He noted that since the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2016, Vietnam–India relations have grown more profound with strengthened high-level political trust, adding that defence and security cooperation has become a bright spot, bringing about substantive results and serving as a key, strategic pillar in the bilateral ties.

In the field of security and law enforcement cooperation, the two sides have maintained regular exchanges of delegations, particularly high-level visits, laying an important foundation for them to conduct information exchange and mutual consultations on strategic issues with significant impact on regional security as well as national security of each country.

Both sides have also actively coordinated in crime prevention and control, strengthened cooperation in ensuring cybersecurity and combating high-tech crime and expanded cooperation in training and capacity building.

To further promote bilateral cooperation in the coming period, Minister Luong Tam Quang proposed that the Ambassador support the implementation of the outcomes of the 3rd Vietnam–India Deputy Ministerial Security Dialogue, while assisting in preparing for the 4th Dialogue expected to be held in India in 2026.

The Minister also suggested that India soon dispatch an expert delegation to Vietnam to discuss cooperation activities in the field of cybersecurity and introduce and transfer modern equipment, technologies and means to the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security, contributing to enhancing Vietnam’s security industry capacity.

In addition, he proposed that India continue to offer scholarships  to officers and students of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam to apply for long-term and short-term programs in India, while accelerating the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on training cooperation between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the Ministry of Home Affairs of India.

For his part, Ambassador Shri Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa expressed his appreciation for Minister Luong Tam Quang’s warm regards and affirmed that he would actively contribute to further promoting and deepening cooperation between the two countries in the time ahead.
